jobiegermano 03 Sep 2015, 17:59 | FinderPop Works on El Capitan Just uninstall and then install 2.5.6 (There may be other steps like disabling SIP, etc.)
I'm happy to help if you can't get it working.

Alas disabling SIP is a step too far for most people. And there are rumours that the "SIP Disable" feature will be removed when 10.11 is released later this month. I'm sticking to Mavericks on my machine at the moment. Mind you, I was still running OS 9 + FinderPop on my iMac in 2005!
On El Capitan, FP does NOT work when you control-click something in the Finder. Or rather, it "works" too well - the Finder's contextual menu items do not show up in the menu. I will hopefully have a bit of time this weekend to work on this, fingers crossed I can get it working. But again, the need to disable SIP is a big no-no for all but the most die-hard of users. |
RonaldPR 04 Sep 2015, 17:38 | Re: FinderPop Works on El Capitan Does SIP need to be disabled and remain disabled for FP to work? Apparently some applications like cDock or Bartender need to have SIP disabled at initial installation, but will continue to work when SIP is again enabled after installation.

This is why I'm not a big fan of beta software
I installed EC on my late-2012 iMac for a bit and when I invoked FinderPop, the system froze to the point of a hard restart. EC is now "gone like a wild goose in Winter". Very happy with Mavericks as I use FinderPop daily and have since the days of OS8. The brief time I spent with El Capitan didn't impress me. |
phindog 14 Sep 2015, 17:18 | Re: FinderPop Works on El Capitan I'm not sure this is directly applicable but Dropbox has a contextual menu item under 10.11 that works without disabling/enabling SIP like you need to do for Bartender. I imagine it's more complicated than that but any ray of hope of keeping this incredibly useful piece of software working...
Thanks Turly! Bill |
turly 14 Sep 2015, 17:50 | Re: FinderPop Works on El Capitan That's very likely to be just a Finder Sync Extension contextual menu item unfortunately ... Finder Sync Extensions were added by Apple to allow the Finder to be more clever about remote storage and syncing of files/folders.
Not really applicable to FinderPop unfortunately. |
timlance 21 Sep 2015, 16:16 | Re: FinderPop Works on El Capitan Installed fine once SIP disabled following the "Bartender instructions". Unfortunately, once installed and then SIP enabled, it does not. Bartender does work once enabled as does cDock supposedly.
Good thing is that FP was quicker for me.

ace42292 25 Sep 2015, 23:11 | Re: FinderPop Works on El Capitan From what I've read in various forums and discussions, it doesn't seem like having to disable SIP is going to be much of a deal-breaker for most advanced/power users when it comes to using apps...especially apps that users deem essential to their everyday workflow (as FP is for me and a lot of others here). |
prof49 29 Sep 2015, 16:13 | Re: FinderPop Works on El Capitan I'm an avid FP user but not very technically sophisticated. Will FP work if I upgrade to El Capitan? Thanks. |

No, it will not work. See discussion above. |
Topo 30 Sep 2015, 23:47 | Re: FinderPop Works on El Capitan This is terrible news. Meaning, FP does NOT work on El Capitan. If I go to System Prefs, they lock up with the dialogue box that says FP is not compatible. There's an "OK" check box, but it will not work. Have o force quit Prefs. Is there a chance FP can be made to work again? I depend on it. |
RonaldPR 01 Oct 2015, 09:21 | Re: FinderPop Works on El Capitan See discussion above in this topic. If there will be a future version of FP that will work in OSX 10.11 (El Capitan), it will only work with SIP (System Integrity Protection) disabled. Disabling SIP is not something an average user should do.
For extensive description of SIP in El Capitan, see: http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/09/os ... view/8/#h1 |
Jay Prospero 01 Oct 2015, 15:27 | Re: FinderPop Works on El Capitan I disabled SIP and reinstalled 2.5.7 to get it working again. I can live without SIP, I can't live without FinderPop and Default Folder X.

prof49 02 Oct 2015, 15:53 | Re: FinderPop Works on El Capitan Is there any hope of resuscitating Finderpop under El Capitan without doing whatever is lost when SIP is disabled? |

Is there any hope of resuscitating Finderpop under El Capitan without doing whatever is lost when SIP is disabled?
Wow, I found your question a bit difficult to parse for some reason. Must be the beer I had
Anyway: short answer - No. FinderPop relies waay too much on patching stuff inside the Finder to get a 'seamless' operation. Longer answer: A very very slight "Maybe". Maybe Apple will add a whitelisting mechanism, but I seriously doubt this. |
fredp151 03 Oct 2015, 05:35 | Re: FinderPop Works on El Capitan Were you actually able to get the current version (2.5.7)? I tried, initially, with SIP disabled, but failed.
I then did a clean install of El Capitan, and was able to install an earlier version (2.5.6), also with SIP disabled.
That worked... but I think it had some trouble with the new type alias' introduced in Yosemite. It did work when I substituted symlinks for alias'. |
beat 14 Oct 2015, 15:47 | Re: FinderPop Works on El Capitan Strange behavior. While it's true that FP does not work in EC's Finder, on my machine FP 2.5.6 works as soon as any app is open – Firefox, Word, anything. |
RonaldPR 14 Oct 2015, 19:09 | Re: FinderPop Works on El Capitan Maybe not so strange. FP will not work in applications, like the Finder, that are protected by SIP. Code injection in those running processes is prevented. But in other (third party) applications it may still work. |
turly 19 Oct 2015, 15:59 | Re: FinderPop Works on El Capitan What Ronald said. It's only Apple apps that are protected by SIP - for now, anyway, I've heard rumours that Apple may extend this protection to third-party apps.
And the 2.5.7 that "works" (with caveats) on El Capitan is here. I still have some work to do before 2.5.8 - which, to emphasise again, will require that SIP be disabled. |
prof49 30 Oct 2015, 15:55 | Re: FinderPop Works on El Capitan Before El Capitan, I used FinderPop + XtraFinder: http://www.trankynam.com/xtrafinder/. Like FinderPop, XtraFinder is blocked by SIP. Hunting for a solution, I discovered this recommendation at https://www.reddit.com/r/OSXTweaks/comm ... ve/cvuxvtq
1. Disable SIP 2. Install XtraFinder 3. Move /Library/ScriptingAdditions/XtraFinder.osax to /System/Library/ScriptingAdditions/XtraFinder.osax 4. Open terminal and run sudo ln -s /System/Library/ScriptingAdditions/XtraFinder.osax /Library/ScriptingAdditions/ 5. Enable SIP Pretty sure the order of steps 1 and 2 doesn't matter
Success appears to vary; see https://www.facebook.com/XtraFinder/
As someone not technically savvy, I wonder whether the recommended solution for XtraFinder is dangerous; if not, might it help revive FinderPop under El Capitan? Sorry if his merely displays my naivete. |
turly 30 Oct 2015, 17:25 | Re: FinderPop Works on El Capitan Unfortunately that won't allow us to patch the Finder code, which is how FinderPop does its stuff |
modelamac 09 Nov 2015, 15:05 | Re: FinderPop Works on El Capitan I found the easiest way is to move the FinderPop Items folder to the end of the Dock, just before the Trash Can. It takes one extra click, but you get the effect of FinderPop until Turly gets time to make a proper fix.
By the way, Turly is just one of a crowd of developers having to fight with SIP. |
vdl 11 Feb 2016, 18:20 | Re: FinderPop Works on El Capitan Here is my experience. I had, on my MacBook Pro, disabled SIP on El Capitan to be able to use FP. Then, some days later, I replace the internal disk (system) with a SSD and completely reinstall the system from scratch. After that, I was about to restart the process to disable the SIP but I realized that FP was fully operational on my brand new system! Hope its Help. Vincent |
