Re: FP is working under macOS Sierra 10.12 with SIP
It will not work like that. You cannot move anything into or out of the System folder with SIP enabled (which is enabled by default). If you want FP to work in Sierra, you will need to follow the steps as described above in the post by blueberry, including steps 2), 5), and 7).

Maybe this helps:

SafariStand uses SIMBL. This article (link below) discusses installing SIMBL in El Capitan.

Re: Finderpop 2.5.7 not working in Safari
FinderPop is not potentially great, it IS great. I used FP for many years, already in MacOS9 and again after it had been released for MacOSX.

However, with SIP in El Capitan, its core features, that depend on patching the Finder, are now blocked.

For only menu navigation (plus optional file info and 'Open with'), CustomMenu seems indeed a good replacement. A customizable menu, somewhat similar to the FP menu, that can be accessed from the menubar. With a hotkey combo the menu can also be invoked at the cursor location, anywhere on the screen in any application.

Re: FinderPop Works on El Capitan
Maybe not so strange. FP will not work in applications, like the Finder, that are protected by SIP. Code injection in those running processes is prevented. But in other (third party) applications it may still work.

Re: FinderPop Works on El Capitan
See discussion above in this topic. If there will be a future version of FP that will work in OSX 10.11 (El Capitan), it will only work with SIP (System Integrity Protection) disabled. Disabling SIP is not something an average user should do.

For extensive description of SIP in El Capitan, see:

Re: FinderPop Works on El Capitan
Does SIP need to be disabled and remain disabled for FP to work? Apparently some applications like cDock or Bartender need to have SIP disabled at initial installation, but will continue to work when SIP is again enabled after installation.

Re: OSX El Capitan?
If there will be a version that will run on OSX El Capitan, it will not run on a default OSX installation. You will need to disable the new "System Integrity Protection" (a.k.a. "Rootless") feature, something most users will be reluctant to do. This problem affects many popular software additions, not only FinderPop.

Re: installation of v 2.5.8 for all users
1, I do not know a version 2.5.8. As far as I am aware, the latest version is 2.5.7

2. First uninstall FP properly by using the option in FinderPop preferences panel > Etc. tab > Uninstall FinderPop. (If FP is installed for more than one user, repeat that for every user that has FP installed.)

3. Then install FinderPop for all users:
- Make sure that System Preferences is not running - quit it if it is running.
- Download the latest FinderPop version and double-click the FinderPop.prefPane icon from that download.
- When System Preferences opens it'll ask you whether FP should be installed for all users or just you. Choose "All users".

How did you do the installation? Not for each user separately, I hope.

At installation (by double clicking the prefs panel file) you choose the option to install "for all users".

FinderPop works fine in Yosemite for others. If you did the installation properly, we'll have to wait for Turly to shed light on this problem.

tonyaguila wrote:Anyway, I discovered that it was only happening with the user account that has FinderPop installed.

Not sure if this is the cause of the issue you report, but with recent OSX versions (since Mountain Lion?) FinderPop will only work properly when installed for all users.

Try:
Uninstall FinderPop (FinderPop prefs panel > Etc. tab > Uninstall FinderPop button)
Restart with FP uninstalled.
Install a fresh copy of FP For All Users.

Re: Some folders won't expand in FP menu
Which version of FP do you use? Version 2.5.7 is supposed to solve the issue with aliases in Yosemite:

• 2.5.7 Allows FinderPop to work with alias files produced by the Yosemite 10.10 Finder.
• In FinderPop's Move/Copy/Alias dialog, you can control-click the Alias button and FinderPop will create symlinks instead of aliases.

Re: Yosemite beta
Just a thought:

I understand that aliases in the FinderPop Items folder that existed before the upgrade to Yosemite continue to works as expected, but that aliases created in Yosemite do not. Correct?

Apple seems to have changed the alias (alias, not simlink) file format before. Aliases used to be small (in bytes) and, if I remember correctly, all about the same size. In more recent OSX versions (since 10.7 or 10.8?) they are of very different size and some are quite large. Maybe Apple changed the alias file format again in Yosemite?

Re: Support: Can't get FP to work on 10.9.4
I am sure FinderPop has never been tested on a configuration like this and I wouldn't be surprised if FinderPop is unable to see, for instance, anything on the desktop in this setup. Only Turly himself can tell.

Have you tried right-clicking (or control-clicking) on anything inside a Finder window that displays the content of a folder that is in its standard location, like the Applications folder?

Re: Support: Can't get FP to work on 10.9.4
The use of the OWC Data Doubler may be more of a problem for FinderPop than FileVault. Do I understand correctly that you start up from the SSD but that the HDD needs to be mounted to see icons on your desktop? That suggests that your Home folder is on the HDD. Exactly what is on the SSD and what is on the HDD?

Re: Support: Can't get FP to work on 10.9.4
For now, we can not exclude that the issue is related to FileVault. However, I think it is unlikely that it is, because FileVault works at a very deep low level and software running on top is not aware of what FileVault is doing.

A way to exclude interference with other third party software would be to do a safe restart and login. Restart, and subsequently login, while holding the shift key. That way no third party software will be loaded.

The safe startup will last (much) longer than a normal restart because the system does a file system check on all connected volumes. Also some of the cache files will be emptied and it may revert some settings you made, even after a following normal restart. On my machine the fast user switching menu that I disabled will reappear, and Easy SIMBL needs to be activated again

When safe login is completed, you can now load only FinderPop by opening System Preferences > FinderPop and and again close System Preferences. Does FP now work? Best check by trying if a FP contextual menu will appear when clicking in the top left corner (on the one pixel in the very corner).

This is a FinderPop feature:
When you click on a (selected) item in the Finder, you will see in the Application menu only the applications that can be used with that item (and folders that may or may not contain such an application). You can disable this feature. See in FP preference panel, Appearance tab, the option "Show only applications which can open the selection".

We cannot see your images this way. You will need to upload them to a place where they can be viewed via the internet with a web-browser and then post links to them here.

You can use FP in Finder and in other applications (if set in the prefs panel) by clicking in unused space in the menu bar. Does that work in the Finder? Does that work in TextEdit?

Re: Can´t invoke on 10.6.3
I have used subsequent versions of FP for many years and on different machines. I do not have, nor ever had, this issue with FinderPop.

I now run FP 2.4.9 in OSX 10.8.4 on a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with 4 GHz RAM. I have 15 items in the "FinderPop Items" folder, nine aliases, four separation folders, and two special link folders (one with ---a for all applications in Applications and Applications/Utilities and one with ---p for running processes).

When I click on icons in the Applications folder, selection is instantaneous. Also, there is no unusual memory use when FinderPop is enabled and used. At this very moment Activity Monitor reports 1.7GB of 4GB installed RAM to be free. (I restarted the machine about six hours ago because of an installation.)

Judging by posts in this support forum, only few people encounter the slowing of selection in the Applications folder. It must be something specific to your (and their) configuration, possibly a conflict with other software.

Did you give Turly the information he asked for in his last post (Dec 2011) here about this issue?

Changed logging in Mountain Lion
This is a Mountain Lion issue rather than a FinderPop issue, but I do not know where to ask this and because it also affects FinderPop, I try here.

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion I notice that many messages that applications used write to a log file and that could be read in Console, are nowhere to be found in Mountain Lion.

The only messages related to FinderPop are of the type:
20-10-12 16:01:43,398 TextEdit[3370]: FinderPop: current app appears to be SandBoxed

The messages that used to be recorded when applications are patched by FinderPop at launch (Patching 'Finder') are missing.

Searching the web, I find only few scattered posts about this (or a similar) issue, sometimes called a change in Mountain Lion and sometimes called a bug in Mountain Lion.

Anyone know what is going on?

Re: FP-Injector quit unexpectedly (10.8.1)
With default (middle) Gatekeeper settings in Mountain Lion, such messages are to be expected for non-signed applications that are launched for the first time. Once allowed to run, it should not happen again (until of course a new version is installed or if you used a maintenance utility that resets the information that the application was allowed to run).

I do not know if FinderPop is code-signed or not, I upgraded to Mountain Lion while FP was already installed. You can find finderpop-daemon inside the FP package and control-click it there if needed:

I don't think the warning is related to FinderPop. FinderPop is installed on my machine. In /Library/ScriptingAdditions/ I only have a FinderPopOsax.osax, no SIMBL.osax. Do you have a (maybe older) SIMBL plugin installed in ~/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/ or in /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/ ?

Does FinderPop not show the FinderPop menu or does FinderPop prevent the normal unmodified contextual menu in Google Chrome? If it blocks the normal contextual menu, you could try to add Google Chrome to the excluded applications list in "Active" tab in FinderPop Preferences panel.

Re: little problem with 10.6
Well, also in 10.6 (Snow Leopard) it works as Liki describes:
When I navigate through the FP menu while keeping the mouse button pressed, FP info for the file appears when pressing "i" over a file icon, but when I press "i" while navigating through the menu without holding the mouse button, FP info appears for a split second, and then the Finder Info panel opens.

When I do the same with pressing option-command instead of "i", in both situations only the FP info for the file appears.

When I read FP Help, it seems to describe this difference between pressing "i" and pressing option-command. I assumed this to be the behaviour I should expect.

But with that option enabled, I can reproduce the problem with other files as well. If I follow the same procedure with the icon of a jpeg image, it will no longer open in Preview, and if I do that with a text file, it will no longer open in TextEdit.

Re: Invoke FP Via Hotkey?
No need to switch to the Finder when there is not enough free space in the menu bar. You can click in the first pixel in the upper left corner of your screen to invoke the FP menu. It works only on that one pixel, so not as convenient as clicking in free space, but it works. Move your mouse cursor into the corner and click.

Maybe you have the option for translucent menu bar enabled (is enabled by default). FinderPop has problems recognizing unused space in the menu bar when the desktop image shines through. Go into System Preferences > Desktop & Screensaver and make sure the related checkbox is not checked.

Re: Mystery solved but not problem.
Do you often use/need the toolbar and/or sidebar in Finder windows?

Double-clicking a folder in a window with toolbar and sidebar hidden will always open that folder in a new window, regardless the setting in Finder preferences. It works like that in Snow Leopard and as far as I remember it worked like that in Leopard. I keep toolbar and sidebar hidden in the window for most folders and I have Finder preferences set to not always open folders in a new window.

Great feature indeed, but the feature works (and has worked in MacOS since long before MacOSX) with holding only the Option key.

Can FP be configured so that just using the Control key alone will invoke it?

It already does that. No need to also hold the Option key to invoke the FP menu.

I do not have a /Library/ScriptingAdditions/ folder and that is also what is reported in Console:

Obviously you cannot cd into a directory that does not exist. It needs to created first. Does FP try to create that folder? Nothing reported about that in Console.

Maybe in some configurations that folder already exists as a result of other software installations? It does not exist here. Snow Leopard was installed with migration of the one user only, last updated with the 10.6.8 Combo updater. So I guess that the /Library/ScriptingAdditions/ folder is not present in Snow Leopard by default.

Re: Seven wishes to improve FP 2.2.1b+
I wouldn't mind addition of an option to sort invisible items after the other items if it is indeed that, an option. For years I am used to see 'dot files' at the top when files are sorted alphabetically and I do not want that changed in FP menus on my computers. I do not normally use the options to see those files in FP, though. When I need to access invisible files I enable those options in FP, or I make them visible in the Finder, or I use Terminal. And I access visible files inside invisible folders sometimes using the "Go" menu in the Finder. It all depends on what I want or need to do.

BTW 1: I notice that the .DS_Store files do not appear in FP menu. Was that already so in previous FP versions?

BTW 2: The desktop files "Desktop DB" and "Desktop DF" files will only appear at root level on disks/volumes that have been used (or are still used) with (Classic) Mac OS. They have no function anymore in Mac OS X.

BTW 3: I suppose the update check will only work for release versions.

Re: copying a folder in the Finder
In list and icon view, selecting a folder does just that. In column view it is not really possible to just select a single folder, single-clicking it will open it. Nevertheless, in list and icon view and when the Finder is set to open a separate window for each folder, it is possible to use FP to move a opened folder.

Edit: I never saw the problem before, not only because I mostly use icon or list view, but also because I never first select an object before I right-click on it to get the contextual menu.

Re: copying a folder in the Finder
I am not sure, but I may have discovered when Andrew sees this problem. I hope I can explain it clearly.

When I use column view, copying folder works fine for most folders regardless the column the folder is in and regardless whether the folder is opened or not. Control-click or right-click (or control-free popup) will invoke the FP menu. When the folder is dragged over a folder or volume the cursor with green + appears and the folder can be moved.

However (apart from some folders that cannot/should not be moved, like my Home folder) there is always one folder where it does not work and that is the folder that is last opened. That is the folder that appears 'selected' in the column before the last column, in the second column from the right. Control-click or right-click (or control-free popup) will invoke the FP menu, but when the folder is dragged over a folder or volume the cursor with green + does not appear and the folder cannot be moved.

First selecting a folder will make it the last opened folder and then it cannot be moved in the FP menu.

This certainly is the way I expect the items to appear in the menus. When those items are made visible in the Finder, sorting by name will sort them the same way in list and column view, it is the way the items are sorted in Terminal, and it is the usual way such items are sorted in other operating systems.

Using control-free popup with the "Contents if on folder" option, the contents menu is shown on folders, but on folder aliases the 'normal' FinderPop enhanced contextual menu is shown.

However, command-control clicking a folder alias does not show the expected contents menu here:

Command-control clicking a folder shows the contents menu of that folder, but command-control clicking a folder alias shows the contents menu of the folder the alias is in instead.

Maybe I am wrong, but I have the feeling that in this thread there is a ongoing misunderstanding between System6 and Turly.

Turly's answers refer each time to possible lagging while using FinderPop, while invoking the FinderPop menu. But System6, as I read it, complains mainly about slowing of the Finder itself with regards to the Applications folder, about slowing while making Finder selections in the Applications folder, about delayed closing of the Applications folder window. He wrote that even after moving the mouse cursor over the red closing button of the Applications folder window it takes long before the red x appears. All this slowing apparently occurring only with the Applications folder and only when FinderPop is active.

Re: FinderPop 2.3.0.2 Beta
Apparently a mix-up with the changed German and Italian localized strings.

The file
FinderPop.prefPane/Contents/Resources/finderpop-daemon.app/Contents/Resources/fp-patch.bundle/Contents/Resources/German.lproj/Localizable.strings
contains the Italian localized strings instead of the German ones.

The German translation is missing, Italian.lproj also contains the Italian Localizable.strings (and the file InfoPlist.strings is missing)

I suppose that Turly, after reading this, will come with a correction soon.

If you prefer a different language for now, for instance English, you could dig deep down into FinderPop to
FinderPop.prefPane/Contents/Resources/finderpop-daemon.app/Contents/Resources/fp-patch.bundle/Contents/Resources/
then remove German.lproj, copy English.lproj and rename that copy to German.lproj.

Or simply go back to beta 2.3.0.1 for now.

Are you aware of Abracode Shortcuts that now has versions for Snow Leopard that supports CM items in Snow Leopard? There are two versions, one for 32bit and one for 64bit items, that can be used simultaneously. Apparently Shortcuts allows access to the old CM items in the new services menu in contextual menus.
(Haven't tried it myself yet, but intend to install it when I upgrade to Snow Leopard.)

Re: FP & Path Finder
Well, that shouldn't surprise you. FinderPop is intended to work with the Finder and clearly not with Path Finder, which is a Finder replacement and which does not use the Finder's contextual menus. In "Active" tab in FinderPop prefs panel you can turn off "Enhance other apps' Contextual Menus too" if you still want FinderPop to work in the menu bar with Path Finder, or you can choose to add Path Finder to the list of applications that will not be patched by FinderPop at all.

Re: My Quickey Command is sometimes intercepted by FinderPop
The "Options" are extras. With all options disabled, you will still have the FinderPop menu in contextual menus. In other words: Only checking "Clicking in unused menubar area invokes FinderPop" does not activate only that feature, it adds that feature. With everything disabled, also in Appearance and Active tabs, you will still have the FinderPop menu in Finder contextual menus, like on the desktop, which is the basic feature of FinderPop.

With the processes submenu disabled, the processes submenu will still appear when command-clicking in the menubar. Enabling that option will make the processes submenu appear always in the FinderPop menu. It looks as if this command-delete in Address Book is sometimes interpreted by FinderPop as a command click in an unused portion of the menubar. Again a keystroke that is seen as clicking in the menubar. Strange.

Re: FinderPop 2.2.4b6 BETA | Thrillseekers | Snow Leopard *ONLY*
Getting used to Mac OS X (10.2) after switching from Mac OS 9 was not easy and one of the things I missed most was FinderPop. Then there was Ittec that had similar features and I used that one until it became clear that development had stopped and it was not updated for Tiger. I found FolderGlance and used it until I discovered that FinderPop was available for Mac OS X. Never looked back. FinderPop has been the most important reason for me to postpone upgrading to Snow Leopard. Although FolderGlance appeared to be compatible with Snow Leopard, I waited for Turly to make FinderPop work in Snow Leopard. The beta versions now seem to be working fine, so one of these days I will upgrade.

I cannot comment on the current FolderGlance versions, but it's basic functionality is very similar to FinderPop's basic features. I do not see how or why anyone would or could use both at the same time.

Re: Menubar item also shows up in contextual menu
Apparently it has been changed. In previous FP versions, menu bar only items are defined by adding the '-!!m' modifier. Are now all '-!!_' item modifiers changed to '---_'?

Edit: Turly posted while I was writing. :)

Re: Menubar item also shows up in contextual menu
As far as I know, there are only two possibilities. Either the FinderPop items are shown inline in contextual menus or the FinderPop items are shows in a submenu in contextual menus. If the item name ends with "-!!m" it will only show in the menu bar menu. (Make sure the alias name does not have a file extension, with a file name extension it will not work as intended.) If all item names end with "-!!m" (no need to put a space in between the name and this ending), none of the items should show in contextual menus, but you will always have a FinderPop folder in the contextual menus.

I think what you ask for is a new feature: When none of the FinderPop items are shown in contextual menus, also do not show the FinderPop folder in contextual menus.

Re: Menubar item also shows up in contextual menu
Isn't that alias simply the only file in your FinderPop Items folder and isn't it thus displayed in the FP menu regardless whether the menu is invoked from the menu bar or elsewhere? Apparently the FP menu is set to be displayed inline (see FP Appearance settings). I am not aware of a feature in FP that displays items in the menu bar menu only. Or am I missing something?

Edit: Sorry, I see now that there is indeed such a feature. Items ending with -!!m should appear only in the menu from the menu bar.

Groovin wrote:Slightly off on a tangent, but, why, oh why has Apple made it so bloody difficult to manipulate file creator/type? It used to be so easy with AppleScript (before I discovered FP) back in the day...

Well, soon you will have no reason anymore to manipulate type and creator codes. Starting with Snow Leopard, type and creator are ignored.

Re: Permissions error 256
Which "newer FP" version did you install in which MacOSX version on what kind of Mac (PPC or Intel), and which FP version is the "old one" that works?

Re: FinderPop 2.2.2 | Thrillseekers | Snow Leopard 32-bit *ONLY*
See above. This beta will only work with 32-bit applications (or applications forced to launch as 32-bit) and in those applications it will work only in the menu bar. The Finder is 64-bit only, so it will not work in the Finder.

Re: File extensions won't hide
In FP menus, the full file names with extensions are indeed shown for individual files for which the extension is hidden in the Finder. I never really noticed that. The .app extension for application bundles is hidden in both Finder and FP menus. The FP setting "Use file names as displayed in Finder" shows the localized names for files and folders instead of their real names and that works fine.

(I think it is not correct anymore to refer to the extensions as DOS extensions. MacOSX needs and uses file name extensions to identify the nature of a file. The old type and creator codes are are not used anymore by most of today's Mac applications and many extensions are even used for MacOSX files only.)

Re: Pasting text from clippings?
Must be something else. When I drag a text clipping directly in the Finder and into a TextEdit window, the text is pasted. If I use "g" in a FinderPop menu and drag that same text clipping into a TextEdit window, the file path is pasted.

Don't know what kind of problems you heard about, FP works fine in 10.5.7 here.

Re: Mystrey items on desktop
Time to finally register for the NEW FinderPop Support Forum :D

I had similar strange items in my FinderPop Desktop submenu in the volumes section at the top. Empty folders that represented volumes that had been mounted in the past. I found them in /Volumes/ I simply trashed them (admin password needed).
