FinderPop 2.5.9-BETA
FinderPop 2.5.9-BETA (tagged "El Kabong") is now available. Don't get your hopes up...

If people want to try 2.5.9 BETA on public betas of 10.13, you can turn off FP's version checking via:
defaults write com.finderpop.finderpop ignoreSysVersionCheck -bool true

Note that all that does is turn off the version checking, if there are still underlying FP problems with the new OS, I'll need to investigate.

This BETA release of FinderPop adds a "menulet" feature to allow access to FinderPop via an "FP" icon on the right-hand-side of the menubar. Enable it in the FinderPop prefpane's "Options" tab. This is useful for running FinderPop - after a fashion - on OS X 10.11 El Capitan. Note that this only gives you the same facilities as "click-in-unused-menubar" - maybe I can eventually add drag and drop support. As usual, you can grab and drag stuff from the resulting FinderPop menu, and all the normal command/option/shift/control stuff applies. Command-click the FP icon to get a menu of currently running apps, Shift-click to get the Desktop menu showing disks and other items on the desktop, a "normal" click gets you the FinderPop menu as if you'd clicked-in-unused-menubar (which doesn't work for most Apple apps when SIP is enabled on El Capitan.)

See previous notes about FinderPop compatibility on OS X 10.11 El Capitan.

INSTALLATION:
Ensure you use Apple's unzipper to unzip the FinderPop zip file as some third-party unzippers do not respect permissions.
Ensure that the System Preferences panel is CLOSED. Quit. Not running. Double-click the FinderPop.prefpane icon. System Preferences will
open and ask if you want to install FinderPop for all users or just you. Choose "All Users" and continue.
On 10.6+, FinderPop "sees" what it was you clicked on in the Finder via the Services subsystem - ensure that you have Folder Actions Setup
enabled: System Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts > Services > Files & Folders > (ensure Folder Actions Setup is checked.)

  • 2.5.9-BETA Adds an optional menulet or menu extra as described above.
  • Minor bugfixes and improvements
  • Add new "Toggle File Extension" AppleScript.
Note that if you have 'Show All File Extensions' checked in the Finder Preferences' "Advanced" tab, that overrides any individual file's settings.

FinderPop 2.5.9-BETA - no menulet in 10.11.2
Hi turly,

I've use FinderPop for many years (since Mac OS 7.5 or 8) an I love it. I don't want to live without it.

Recently I upgraded from Yosemite to El Capitan (10.11.2). SIP is enabled and I don't want disabling it. Today, I've install FinderPop 2.5.9-Beta to try the menulet. But I can't see the menulet in the menubar, though I've enable it in the "Options" tab of the FP prefpane. Rebooting my iMac or switching FP on and off takes no effect. What's wrong? I've understand your explanations, that the menulet should work with SIP is enabled. It seems, that something blocks the menulet.

Re: FinderPop 2.5.9-BETA
Hmm, that's an odd one. Was this a completely fresh install of FP (ie it had never been installed on that system before)?

Can you go to the FinderPop prefPane's "Etc." tab, click "Uninstall FinderPop" and follow the instructions? Your FinderPop Items folder and FP settings will be untouched so you don't need to worry about losing data.

Then re-install the FP-2.5.9 you downloaded - making sure you choose to install for "All Users" instead of just you. Let me know how it goes.

Re: FinderPop 2.5.9-BETA
No, it wasn't a completely fresh install of FP. I had install FP 2.5.9-Beta over the existing version 2.5.7, which was disabled since upgrade of El Capitan.

Today I've uninstall FP how described ("Uninstall FinderPop" in the prefPane and follows the instructions) and re-install FP 2.5.9-Beta as admin-user for "All Users". But it take no effects: I get not the menulet in the menubar. I open the FinderPop prefPane (FinderPop is "On"), go to "Options", enable "Use menulet to invoke FinderPop" and close the prefPane's window, but there is no menulet in the menubar. If I re-open Finderpop prefPane, the Option "Use menulet to invoke FinderPop" is disabled again! Switching FP off and on don't change this behavior.

I wish you a happy new year!

Re: FinderPop 2.5.9-BETA
Hi turly,

I've play around the problem, but get no solution :(

* Deinstalling FP and fresh reinstall. No menulet.
* Disabling SIP, restart, fresh install of FP 2.5.9-Beta. FP itself works, but the menulet don't appear.
* Enabling SIP, restart. No menulet.

The option "Use menulet to invoke FinderPop" get disabled every time I close the prefPanes window with both: SIP disabled and SIP enabled.

EDIT:
I've now tried the hint from member Salamac in his post "Yes, FP works in El Capitan with SIP!" in the FP Support Forum (viewtopic.php?f=2&t=350). Yes, FP 2.5.9-Beta works with SIP. But without menulet - same behavior as before.

Re: FinderPop 2.5.9-BETA
Hi Turly,

Thanks very much for continuing the development of FinderPop, like other longtime users, I'd be stuffed without this wonderful utility. I'm getting really disappointed with Apple's disregard for developers and users and its tendency to make applications and the OS less intuitive and more gimmicky.

I put off upgrading (cough) to 10.11 until I knew there was a working version of FinderPop.

The beta version seems to be working okay for me when I click on the FP section of the menu and it occasionally works on the blank part of the menu. Is that a quirk of 10.11?

Thanks again for your excellent work, don't let the bastards beat you.

Cheers,
turly

Re: FinderPop 2.5.9-BETA
It'll work in the blank part of the menu for non-SIP-protected apps. This generally means all third-party apps and some Apple apps that they haven't gotten around to protecting.

Happy new year!

I'm not sure how they did it but the utility, Default Folder, now works with El Capitan without disabling SIP.

Re: FinderPop 2.5.9-BETA
I'm not sure Default Folder X had to face the same challenges, especially regarding the Finder integration.
From what I've read, it was a significant work nonetheless, rewriting large chunks of the original code.

Default Folder 5.0 has basically the same function as v4 but it is now an application, not a System Preference as it used to be. It resides in the Application folder, not the PreferencePanes folder. You can choose to have it starts when you log in and you can show it in the Menu Bar. Aside from that I haven't noticed a difference in behavior yet.

I am not sure FinderPop could work as an application because it directly interacts with the Finder on a constant basis.

Now I only got the FP Menu, hope asap I can have it back!

Derek, did you look at the trick described in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=350
It worked for me here under 10.11.3 with SIP enabled.

Re: FinderPop 2.5.9-BETA
Just to report... still working A - OK under the newest OS update of 10.11.3. My only problem since installing 2.5.9 in November was retraining my muscle memory that it had to go up to the menu bar (instead of anywhere on desktop) after all these years.

Re: FinderPop 2.5.9-BETA
Hi Turly

Many many thanks for Finderpop. It is by far one of my favorite and must have utilities on Mac, just like PopUp Folder used to be in the very old days.

As of today, there are 2 glitches that bother me in the current beta:

1 - in any Finder window, in Icon view (as opposed to list or column view), the original contextual menu contents disappears, only the Finderpop contextual menu contents appears.

2 - on multiple display setup, it is not possible to have the menubar click (and shift click) on any other display than the main display (tested on dual display actually).

Other than that, Finderpop just rocks on my El Capitan setup - I choose liberty instead of SIPcurity, and I am looking forward to sharing some beers with you.

Re: FinderPop 2.5.9-BETA
Turly: An idea for you to think about. The beta is still working fine for me and I have gotten used to having to go up to the menu bar. Is it possible to "nail" the "FP" icon to a fixed spot in the menu bar? Every time that I restart, the icon ends up in a different place.

I'm thinking there must be a trick somewhere because the first few icons (all Mac OS items) at the right hand end are always in the same place. AND the Dropbox icon is always at the far left. All of the icons in between are random in their placement.

This would allow me to go to the same spot all of the time instead of "retraining" after every restart.

Re: FinderPop 2.5.9-BETA
Not at my Mac this week, sorry!
There's no documented API for command-dragging to move your menulet unfortunately.
I have in the past used MenuBar ReArranger and BarTender to customize menulets, but have no idea whether these work anymore.

Non-Apple Menulets appear to be added to the menubar in the order the apps were launched, so perhaps killing and restarting FinderPop will always make it the leftmost menulet?

Re: FinderPop 2.5.9-BETA
Hi Turly,

I have FinderPop 2.5.9-BETA functioning using 10.11.3. So far it appears to be OK. I have SIP enabled when I installed the prefpane in your FinderPop 2.5.9-BETA download, and I get the FP menulet.

Hope this helps someone wanting to use FinderPop again. I did not try to go back to 2.5.7 version. I figured if 2.5.9-BETA did not work, I would wait until a working release version comes out.

Again thank you Turly - and excellent job as always.

Re: FinderPop 2.5.9-BETA
As I already used Default Folder for years I talked to the developer and he integrated submenu folder access like FP to the taskbar menus of DF.
As FP works no more without digging into system viscerals I have to abandon some of the features of FP and stick only with DF.
FinderPop: Rest In Peace

Or will there be a comeback????

Working perfectly well in two Macs running Sierra, this iMac for instance, on 10.12.1. (I have to do the osax trick in both, though).

Thanks Turly, thank you guys!

I have the same problem. I always prefer Icon view in folder windows. Anyone knows workaround for the problem?

Re: FinderPop 2.5.9-BETA
So in other words, FinderPop works well in HighSierra if we do the usual SIP treatment as in Sierra and then execute this command:

defaults write com.finderpop.finderpop ignoreSysVersionCheck -bool true

(I assume it is a Terminal command executed using admin privileges?)

If someone can confirm, I can start seriously looking into installing HighSierra in my machines. The new file system scares me a lot, though...

Thanks!

After doing so AND after running the bool true command in Terminal, FP 2.5.9 works perfectly from the Finder menu.
